Italian Octagonal Inlaid Occasional Table, Mid 20th Century, circa 1960–1970, in the Manner of Carlo Bugatti
An eye-catching Italian octagonal occasional table, dating to the mid 20th century, circa 1960–1970, and designed in the manner of Carlo Bugatti. The table is fully clad in intricate geometric marquetry, combining contrasting woods with light-coloured inlay to create a richly patterned surface across the top, frieze, and legs.
The faceted octagonal top is centred with a radiating star motif, framed by finely detailed borders, while the tapering body stands on shaped feet with arched cut-outs, lending the piece a sculptural, architectural presence. The surface is finished with a high-gloss lacquer, enhancing the depth and contrast of the inlay and distinguishing it from earlier hand-waxed examples.
This type of decorative furniture reflects the mid-century Italian revival of Bugatti’s exotic, historicist vocabulary, produced as bold statement pieces for interiors rather than as functional vernacular furniture.
A striking object, well suited to eclectic, maximalist, or design-led interiors, and equally effective as a standalone sculptural piece.
