A Large 19th Century Oval Anglo-Indian Carved Hardwood Elephant Table with Solid Bone Tusks
A striking 19th-century Anglo-Indian occasional table, expertly hand carved from dense hardwood and richly patinated with age. The oval top is decorated with deeply carved concentric foliate and geometric motifs, displaying confident workmanship and traditional Indian carving techniques adapted for the British colonial market.
The table is supported by four sculptural legs carved as stylised elephant heads, each finely detailed with expressive features and flowing trunks. The elephants retain solid carved bone tusks, which project naturally from the heads, along with inset bone eyes, creating a strong visual contrast against the dark polished wood. These three-dimensional bone elements are characteristic of higher-quality Anglo-Indian furniture of the period and should not be confused with surface inlay.
Such tables were produced in India during the 19th century for export to Britain, combining European furniture forms with Indian symbolism and ornament. The elephant motif—associated with strength, protection, and prosperity—was especially popular in Victorian interiors and remains highly decorative today.
The table displays a deep, warm patina, with surface wear, minor marks, and subtle irregularities consistent with age and hand craftsmanship. It is structurally sound and presents well, making it suitable for use as a centre table, side table, or statement decorative piece.
A characterful and evocative example of Anglo-Indian colonial furniture, ideal for eclectic, traditional, or curated antique interiors.
